Tongue and Lip-Tie

What is a Tongue and Lip-Tie?

The tongue and lip are part of a complex group of muscles in the mouth, and are important for all oral functions. There is an attachment of both the tongue (“lingual frenum”) and upper lip (“labial frenum”). When these restrict the natural mobility and function of these muscles, they are referred to as “tongue-tied” or “ankyloglossia,” and “lip-tied.” When restrictive, your child may experience a multitude of symptoms.

Some notable symptoms of tongue and/or lip tie:

For Baby: Painful nursing, difficulty bottle feeding, slow/poor weight gain, reflux, excessive gassiness, prolonged feeding time at breast or bottle, clicking and smacking noise when feeding.

Adjusting your breastfeeding position or your baby’s latch often helps. So, not all babies with a lingual frenulum need a frenectomy. However, some babies benefit from this procedure to help their tongues function as they should.

For Child/Adult: Frustration with communication, trouble with speech sounds/mumbling, speech delay, slow/picky eater, choking/gagging, spitting out food, grinds teeth, sleeps with mouth open, snores (quiet or loud), Enlarged tonsils/adenoids, recurrent ear infections, hyperactivity/inattention.

What is a Frenectomy?

When a tongue tie and/or lip tie is diagnosed as restrictive, a Frenectomy may be indicated. This is the release of the tissue to allow for a full range of motion. In our practice, this procedure is completed using a laser. Dr. Jake and Dr. Jenn have completed extensive education in the diagnosis, the treatment and the follow up care necessary for optimal success.

Treatment for a tongue tie or a lip tie is best addressed through a team approach. This may involve assistance from: A lactation consultant, a myofunctional therapist, and/or a speech therapist.
